Sonoma county is also home to some amazing micro-breweries!

Here in Healdsburg, we have the Bear Republic Brewing Company, home of the Racer 5 IPA, and an award winner at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival.

Santa Rosa is home to 3rd Street Aleworks and Russian River Brewing Company. Russian River is already infamous to the beer snob for their Pliny the Elder double IPA, and it’s harder to find Pliny the Younger (which will be released on February 3, 2012 and available for 14 days on draft at the brewery only, so mark your calendars!). They are also home to some very tasty pizzas, calzones and beer bites (pizza dough with various toppings). Don’t forget though, this is still Wine Country, and you can find Seghesio Zin and La Crema Pinot at Russian River as well!

3rd Street Alworks offers an array of locally named beers, from Annadel Pale Ale to Bodega Head IPA and Goat Rock Dopplebock, as well as pool tables and lots of TVs for your game viewing pleasure.

One of my favorites for atmosphere is Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma. A long drive from Healdsburg, but a great stop on your way into the area. They have a fun, casual beer garden and feature a local band every evening. Here, try their most well known IPA, or for something a little different go for A little sumpin’ sumpin ale, or the hairy eyeball for something a little darker!

So, next time you’re wine tasting in Sonoma, don’t forget to take a break from all that wine sipping, and grab a beer!

Early 2012 local events!

Today I was perusing upcoming Wine Country events, and have to admit I’m pretty excited about the first weekend of February. Not only is it Super Bowl Weekend (and with the way the season is going, I’d be excited to see either Green Bay or San Francisco go all the way!), but it’s also the weekend of Silver Oak’s bi-annual release party (always a blast!), AND the 23rd annual crab festival at the Sonoma County fairgrounds!

But let’s not forget about January, which features one of my favorite Wine Road events, Winter Wineland. This economically priced event is an excellent way to visit local wineries, but what really makes this event stand out is that each winery features either a local artist, or an educational display, and really showcases Sonoma County. The event happens the weekend of January 14th, and tickets are already on sale! Discounted, advanced ticket sales end January 9th, so don’t forget to get yours ahead of time!

Goodbye to our Magnolia Tree

We were heartbroken recently to have to say goodbye to our Magnolia Tree that has graced the front yard of the Honor Mansion for more than 130 years! It was actually planted before the house was built in 1883. Unfortunately, as it was very old and dying, it had become a hazard and had to be removed.

It was hard to watch it go, not only for us, but for the neighborhood. We had several phone calls of condolences for the loss!

Our Magnolia Room, which had faced out on this tree, will keep it's name as an honor to the old tree. We are in the process of re-landscaping the front yard. While still in the works, I'm sure the result will be something beautiful and relaxing, in keeping with the look and feel of the Honor Mansion Resort.

Honor Mansion Wins 2 Traveler Choice Awards!

The Honor Mansion, A Resort Inn HONORED AS BEST SERVICE AND ROMANCE IN THE

2011 TRIPADVISOR TRAVELERS’ CHOICE AWARDS

Healdsburg, CA, January 19, 2011 –The Honor Mansion, A Resort Inn was chosen as a Best Service Hotel and Best Romance Hotel by TripAdvisor® in its 2011 Travelers’ Choice® awards. Research shows that B&Bs and country inns are sorely misunderstood. We’re here to explain why B&Bs are a better way to stay. Younger travelers think B&Bs are for “oldies” and others believe the B in B&B stands for boutique or expensive. Let’s debunk some of those B&B myths and learn more about today’s B&B experience.

<cufon style="WIDTH: 36px; HEIGHT: 16px" class="cufon cufon-vml" alt="“But "><cufoncanvas style="HEIGHT: 20px; TOP: -3px; LEFT: -3px"><cvml:shape style="WIDTH: 57px; HEIGHT: 20px" path=" m134,-235 c123,-234,118,-229,119,-215 l134,-215,134,-166,89,-166 c89,-212,81,-265,134,-261 l134,-235 x m67,-235 c56,-233,52,-228,52,-215 l67,-215,67,-166,22,-166 c22,-213,15,-264,67,-261 l67,-235 x e m-60,-344 l1167,85 ns e" stroked="f" fillcolor="#099" coordorigin="-60,-344" coordsize="1227,429"></cvml:shape><cvml:shape style="WIDTH: 57px; HEIGHT: 20px" path=" m117,-183 c117,-208,98,-212,70,-211 l70,-153 c98,-152,117,-158,117,-183 x m130,-76 c131,-107,104,-114,70,-112 l70,-45 c102,-44,130,-47,130,-76 x m179,-78 c181,1,106,4,22,0 l22,-256 c96,-260,165,-255,165,-188,165,-163,156,-147,139,-138,163,-131,178,-108,179,-78 x e m-212,-344 l1015,85 ns e" stroked="f" fillcolor="#099" coordorigin="-212,-344" coordsize="1227,429"></cvml:shape>"But I'll have to eat with people I don't know! Cold, foggy summer mornings delayed the ripening of the grapes. This caused many growers to cut back the leaves to give the grapes more direct sunlight. A three day heat wave in August of temperatures over 100 sunburned a lot of grapes in the area, creating huge losses (including our own Zinfandel; we lost all of it this year). Even vineyards not affected by the sunburn were weeks behind in harvesting. While this caused a lot of worry for wine makers, wanting to get everything in before the rains this weekend, it actually created a longer harvest season for guests to experience.

While we aren’t busy harvesting grapes, harvest is still a busy for us at the Inn, with lots of great guests staying during this amazing time of the year. I did manage to get away from the Inn to experience a couple awesome harvest parties however!

At Michel-Schlumberger, I was lucky enough to be able to attend one of their harvest luncheons, catered by Jeff and Susan Mall from Zin Restaurant. We began with a tour through the vineyards with owner Jacque. It is clear from first meeting Jacque that he is passionate about what he does, from running the winery to keeping his bees. We were really fortunate to receive this tour from him! He led us through the vines, letting us eat grapes right off the vine! There were even “secret” stations of wine set up, so we could actually drink the wine out in the vines the wine started from! This was such a neat experience, getting to see (and taste) the wine in so many different stages, from grape to barrel to glass. In the barrel room, we also got to taste their just harvested Pinot Gris, which I have to say was amazing!

After the tour, we were seated at a table shaded by a huge oak tree; a completely serene location to enjoy more excellent wines, and begin our lunch. Since we’d arrived, we could smell the house made Jambalaya cooking in a pot right on the patio, but first we started with a salad, complete with Eastside Farm award winning tomatoes. The delectable main course was the Jambalaya, also featuring the home grown tomatoes. We ended with an amazing flourless chocolate cake. While some guests admitted defeat and left some cake on their plate, I made the Mall’s proud by finishing every dish, and with pleasure!

Michel Schlumberger hosts these Harvest Luncheons Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in September and October, featuring local restaurants and chefs, and if you’re in the area for one, I would 100% recommend a reservation, you won’t regret it!

I also found time to make it to Dutcher Crossing's annual Oktoberfest (post and pictures to follow soon), but there were so many options I couldn't enjoy them all! Below are a few tips to help you fully appreciate wine country without breaking the bank.
· Travel mid-week; lodging will be less than weekend rates, and more businesses (restaurants, wineries, shops) will run specials to encourage people to break away from weekend trips. This also means that it will be less crowded, making a more enjoyable trip for you! The same can be said for traveling off-season. For example, the weekend of March 19th visit downtown Healdsburg for the Healdsburg Sidewalk Sale!
· Mid-week travel will also create more dining options at some of our amazing local restaurants. Sunday thru Thursday Zin Restaurant offers Blue Plate Specials, none over $20. Dry Creek Kitchen offers a Thursday Surf and Turf menu (which I can tell you from experience is quite tasty!). A number of other local restaurants offer local nights, discount nights, etc, that vary through the year. Be sure to check websites of restaurants you are interested in before you arrive, so you know which days will be best to visit each!
· If you’ve been to Napa, you are probably familiar with rather extravagant tasting and tour fees. That is not (usually) the case here in Healdsburg/Sonoma. On www.wineroad.com you can actually search for wineries, and choose the amenity “tasting fee complimentary” to come up with a great list of local wineries that do not charge to taste. Also, your concierge often has passes and connections that will help out! Don’t feel bad about asking! For example, we hand out passes automatically to guests at check-in, but sometimes there are more wineries that offer passes that we may not have on hand. Those wineries will still honor the discount as long as you let them know where you’re staying. Aside from passes for tastings, your concierge may have other connections. We have a couple wineries that will comp a tour or tasting for a guest if we call and make the reservation. But you’ll never know if you don’t ask!
· Tour with some friends! The more of you there are, the less certain things will cost, such as your rental car, or a tour guide. Transportation services generally charge by the hour, not person, so your individual cost will be less. Plus, you’ll have someone handy to take a picture of you and your significant other!
These are just a few ideas to help you visit Healdsburg a little more affordably! Always check www.wineroad.com and www.healdsburg.com event pages to see what else may be happening in the area!

Winter Wine Land

In the spirit of trying new things (my new year’s resolution) I decided to participate in Winter Wine Land this year. For those of you that don’t know, this is an annual event in the Healdsburg area, put on by the Wine Road, where you can by a pass to visit a good majority of the local wineries. These wineries generally offer food, specials, and pour wine not always offered. We have guests that come every year specifically for this event, and absolutely love it! I figured I should see what it was all about.
We started promptly at 11:00a.m. at Hanna in Alexander Valley. They had a “Grease” theme, with Pink Ladies costumes, music and decorations, which was great! I had a couple favorites here, their Sauvignon Blanc (which I’d had before), and their Jasmine Vixen, a red blend. Not only was this very tasty, but has a great name too!
Next was Alexander Valley Vineyards, just down the road. Great wines and it was wonderful to taste their wines with some an excellent beef stew, which was very welcome as it was a fairly cold and rainy Sunday.
Next to White Oak, a completely new winery to me. The property was beautiful, especially the fountain out front. Here, another amazing Sauvignon blanc, but what lingers with me still is their Syrah paired with pork sliders and streusel! We stayed here for quite awhile, enjoying the atmosphere, wine, company and space heaters!
We moved onto Stryker Sonoma, a personal favorite. The views from their tasting room were amazing, cloudy skies only adding to the vistas. We were able to taste a couple wines here from their Monte Rosso vineyards, which I had not tried before. These are something you must ask to taste the next time you visit! They paired their 2003 Monte Rosso Cabernet with an excellent chocolate bark, with amazing results!
After Stryker we headed over to the Dry Creek Valley. I’d been intrigued for days by facebook and twitter posts from Michel-Schlumberger about their ‘Winter Wine Land Olympics’ and ‘Jamaican bobsledder’, and had to check it out. Greeting us at the entry was, in fact, a Jamaican bobsledder, and by following the twitter instructions of saying “ya mon” to him (actually Jim Morris, the director of sales and marketing), we were permitted entry to their reserve tasting, which was an array of amazing Cabernet vintages from their cellars! This was a really fun winery to visit. The staff were all dressed as various winter Olympic athletes, (Picabo Street, etc), and the winery was decked out in fitting decorations. The rain put a stop to any actual games they may have had planned, but it was a lot of fun in spite of that!
No day of wine tasting is complete without dinner in Healdsburg, so off we went to Willi’s Seafood. First we made a quick stop to check out Thumbprint Cellars new tasting room, getting in just minutes before closing, so weren’t there too long, but managed to pick up a bottle of my favorite Viognier! At Willi’s we had some of our favorites; calamari, sourdough bread, and lobster rolls. Fully satisfied, we called it a day!
I was a little skeptical at first, afraid that there would be too many people in the area to really enjoy myself, or the wines. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it was never overly crowded any where I went. The fact that so many wineries participate probably spread out the visitors between the three valleys. There were people around of course, but it was great to chat with them about the wines and the event. If you are the type of wine taster who likes to spend their time talking to staff and wine makers, this is probably not a good time to come to wine country. However, if you want a fun, easy going weekend of wine tasting, this is a wonderful event that I highly recommend!

Happy New Year's!

It’s almost that time; time to make your New Year’s Resolution(s)! If you’re anything like me, a New Year’s Resolution rarely lasts until the following New Years…. Or even to the end of March! That could potentially have less to do with the resolution maker than the resolution itself. “Eat Healthy”, a common choice, but what does it really mean? No processed foods? No soda or fast food? “Get in Shape”; this resolution is the reason Gyms are so full the first few months of the year. But as time goes on, people stop going to the gym, for various reasons. For one, that is not a FUN resolution. It sounds more like a chore. “Get in shape” is much different than “run a marathon” or “Climb Mt. Whitney” (almost 15,000 feet!). Both these things are tangible goals that you can actually accomplish, that take training, devotion and focus to complete. “Eat Healthy” or “Get in Shape” are things that don’t really have an end, and therefore are harder to follow through on. They can be a lifestyle change, but as New Year’s resolution goes, I think we can all choose better!
I’ve decided I want to live a richer life. That is of course quite vague. To accomplish this goal, I’ve decided that my New Year’s Resolution is to try something new at minimum once a week. I’ve already decided I’m going to try Zumba, a Latin music based fitness routine, as well as make my own lasagna. Coming up with something new, that I actually have an interest in doing (no skydiving for me!), will take a little more creativity than I normally use, but any suggestions are welcome!
I hope regardless of what your resolutions are, or even if you decide not to make any, that you have a full, rich, happy 2010!

Best Time To Visit Wine Country

The Healdsburg area (which of course includes the three wine valleys, Dry Creek, Alexander and Russian River) has around 150 wineries. With that many great local wineries nearby, there’s almost always some type of event occurring, from Seghesio’s Vineyards Winter Truffle Dinner in January, to their Sausage making day in December, or the Healdsburg Jazz Festival in June, or Kendall Jackson’s Heirloom Festival in October. Wine Road (www.wineroad.com) posts events as they hear about them on their website, and the Healdsburg Chamber also posts events (www.healdsburg.com). These are good sites to keep an eye on when trying to decide when the perfect time to visit Healdsburg is.

There is never really a BAD time to visit. This past month we had near record breaking lows of 30s in the day and in the teens at night, but that is a VERY rare occurrence here, and is mild compared to what a lot of guests experience at home! Winter is actually a great time to visit wineries. With the harvest in, and bottling well under way, the winery staff, and wine makers, have more time to visit with guests. A twenty minute tasting can easily turn into a two hour long tour and explanation of their history and wine making process. It’s also easier to get dinner reservations last minute, if you don’t want to commit to anything in advance!

The favorite time of year for many is of course Harvest, September and October. There’s always workers scurrying around wineries, bringing grapes in, sorting them, crushing, etc, and a lot of wineries will let visitors participate, and many also have Harvest parties this time of year as well. This year Michel-Schlumberger had a series of Harvest Luncheons, catered by various local restaurants, that were a huge hit and sure to return in 2010!

If you’re a regular visitor to the area, you may already know what events you want to attend again, or maybe for the first time. What better reason to take advantage of our ‘Plan Ahead’ special (http://honormansion.com/member/firstTimeSpecials.asp), where if you book in 2009 for 2010, you’ll get a 20% discount! There are very few restrictions to this (just a few holidays and specific events), so almost any event you’re looking to attend will fall under the time frame of this special! But there is only a few days left in 2009, so call A.S.A.P!!!

The Holidays in Healdsburg

If you’re anything like me, you’re not quite ready for Thanksgiving (tomorrow!) let alone Christmas. Luckily, Healdsburg is here to help you get ready! With lots of holiday festivities in the area, what better way to jump start your holiday shopping then a trip to Wine Country?
This Friday Healdsburg is hosting their annual Downtown Holiday Party. Shops will be open later (until 9:00p.m.!), with little extras for you while you shop including wine, refreshments, live jazz and horse drawn carriage rides. Just outside of town, Bella Vineyards is having their Thanksgiving Weekend holiday party, with live music, food, and holiday gifts (11/27 &28). To keep the festive shopping weekend going, the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market is also hosting an arts and crafts fair (9a.m.-12p.m.). Saturday night, drive just 10 minutes north to Geyserville to enjoy their 2nd annual holiday tree lighting party, with music, refreshments, Santa, as well as ways to donate gifts for the holiday season. Sunday night, head back to downtown Healdsburg for their annual tree lighting at 5:00p.m.

Can’t make it to Healdsburg this weekend? There is still plenty to do and see prior to Christmas. To get in the holiday spirit of giving, December 3rd is the annual Dining Out for Life, where many of the local restaurants donate a percentage of the night’s proceeds to Food For Thought. December 4th is the last First Friday Art Walk in the 15 downtown Healdsburg galleries. If you missed the Holiday Party on November 27th, you can still head to the Santa Saturday December 12th, where the local merchants will be serving festive refreshments and more holiday specials for that last rush of shopping before Christmas!
This just brushes the edge of all the great holiday options in Healdsburg this time of year, as there are far too many to fit here! Be sure to check out www.healdsburg.com for more information on any of these, as well as other activities!
Another VERY important site this time of year is the Wine Road, who has put together a list of holiday hours for a majority of the local wineries, so you know whether you’re favorite winery is opened or closed while you are in Healdsburg during the holidays! http://www.wineroad.com/images/pdfs/holiday-hours-09.pdf

A little history....

The original owner was the Squire Butcher who built the mansion in 1883 after striking it rich during the Gold Rush. His daughter, Bertha, married Henry Honor. Their son Herbert Honor became a doctor, married a doctor named Vera, and in 1958 the couple began to use the mansion as their home base to practice medicine. They used the South Wing as their practice (which is now the Pool Suite and Garden Suite), and remodeled the mansion into three apartments; one to live in and two to rent out. In 1991, after having the Mansion in their family for 108 years, the Honor's sold the home to Joe & Linda Forest. For three years they used the home as a vacation rental, but sold to the current owners, Steve & Cathi Fowler, in 1994.

The Fowlers converted the three apartments into a bed and breakfast, renovating and decorating every inch of the home, as well as the surrounding property. It began with five rooms in the main house. As time went on they had the opportunity to renovate the 'carriage house' into what is now the Squire's Cottage, as well as a huge project of turning the water tower into a two level suite, the Tower Suite, which is one of the most unique and sought after rooms on the property.

In 1997, the Fowlers had the opportunity to purchase the property immediately behind the existing Honor Mansion Property. With this area, they increased the property to almost 4 acres. With lots of time, effort and love they transformed the property into the resort grounds you can see today, including 2 bocce ball courts, croquet, a PGA putting green, tennis and basketball court. They also acquired two buildings with the purchase, which have become the four Vineyard Suites, bringing the total of rooms to 13.
