Spring Newsletter

banner-img 2

Can you believe we are already a quarter of the way into 2013? How has it happened so quickly? We are getting ready for the upcoming busy season, painting walls and updating room details that we can't do during the busier months. We also have a couple big changes planned for a couple rooms that we hope to have in place this summer! Another fun project this time of year is working on our summer wine pouring schedule, so you can enjoy some of our favorite local wineries right on the Honor Mansion property during our appetizer hour!

Employee of the Month
This month we had the staff vote on which employee they felt really went above and beyond and was a team player, and so this month we are celebrating one of our  cooks and housekeepers, Paola! She cooks, cleans rooms, does laundry, and anything else needed, all with an amazing smile on her face! She always tries to help and do her best and make everything perfect as possible for our guests. She is a delight to work with.
THANKS PAOLA FOR ALL YOU DO!

Sonoma: More than great wine!
Many of you are familiar with Sonoma as a premier wine destination, but the area has so much more to offer! Here are some of our favorite non-wine related activities.

Biking: With miles of back country roads, Sonoma is becoming a bikers Mecca! Perfect for day trips, or try one of the MANY organized rides and competitions, including the Vineman, Levi Leipheimer's Grand Fondo, Healdsburg's Century Ride and
the first annual I Bike Sonoma Century this June.

Culture: The Charles Schultz Museum (creator of Snoopy and the Peanuts comic strip) is a great stop in Santa Rosa, and is very close to the Pacific Coast Air Museum at the Sonoma County Airport. In Healdsburg, enjoy rotating art exhibits at the Healdsburg Center for the Arts and several other galleries, and catch local stage productions at The Raven Theater. You can also enjoy local stage productions, comedy, concerts and various other events, from Kathy Griffin in April to a local Brew Fest in June at the Wells Fargo Center in Santa Rosa.

Hiking: Armstrong Redwood Park is about 30 minutes away from the Honor Mansion, and has easy 1 mile hikes up to all day strenuous hikes, among the stunning redwood forest. Lake Sonoma and Healdsburg Ridge in town offer great, fairly easy hikes with stunning vistas. Or travel to Sonoma Valley and visit historic Jack London Park, or Sugar Loaf Ridge for even more options.

Hot Air Ballooning: Sonoma County is incredibly picturesque, and one of the best ways to see everything the area has to offer is from the sky!

Kayaking: Choose an easy half day float down the Russian River with River's Edge, or explore a little further out and kayak where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean in Jenner.

Sonoma in the Press

Can’t decide if Sonoma is right for you? Here are some great articles and features from well known and respected magazines about the area to help you with your vacation research!

In 2011 Bicycling Magazine named the area one of the top 6 best cities for a biking vacation.
Healdsburg, California
This quaint town is an ideal staging ground for exploring Sonoma wine country by bike. Start rides with a homemade energy bar at the Jimtown Store and end with gelato sandwiches at Bovolo. Book a tasting ride with Wine Country Bikes, or visit on August 21 for the Tour de Vine, during which you'll ride with local vintners and chefs and feast on goat cheese and baguettes at the farmers' market. Sleep off your food coma at the new eco-chic h2hotel, which offers earth-friendly amenities along with secure bicycle storage and a collection of hip Public bikes guests can take for a spin.
 Explore rides in Healdsburg, California.

2012 Sunset Magazine Sonoma vs. Napa competition named Sonoma the winner.
The case for Sonoma
“The county’s 1,576 square miles are a sprawling garden of organic produce, free-range meats, and since 1824, grapes. (George Yount planted Napa’s first vines in the 1830s, using Sonoma cuttings.) Napa offers the thrill of tasting wines few can afford and eating trendy food cooked by the employees of celebrity chefs. In Sonoma, you can access countryside, towns, and tasting rooms—sans appointment—to try some of the most distinctive and innovative wines available. True, pockets have trended upscale. Limos? Check. Celebs like Lady Gaga looking to buy? Check. But at heart, this is authentic country open to visitors—casual and wine snob alike.”  Click to see article
2012 Sunset Magazine produced an excellent article about the area’s amazing beer choices.
“Our route started in Petaluma, about an hour north of San Francisco, and snaked through Sonoma and Mendocino Counties, home to some of the most exciting beermaking on the planet. We’d slip through wine country’s back door to taste toasty lagers, mouth-puckering sours, stouts the color of crude oil, and the West’s signature brew, the hoppy India Pale Ale. Bud country this was not. Click to see article

2012 Wine Spectator Sonoma Beckons Feature.
“Location is another important consideration; Sonoma is larger and more geographically complex than Napa, and touring one of its many appellations can take more than a day. The town plazas of Healdsburg and Sonoma are good starting points for exploring the surrounding regions. Each town has its own distinct style, but both offer convenient access to tasting rooms, restaurants and nightlife.”
This was an amazing piece in June 2012 about great places to stay, dine and taste in Sonoma County. You do have to be a member to be able to view the article online,* but you can read what they had to say about the Honor Mansion here.
* It looks like someone did put the whole article on this website.

Though not a magazine, Tripadvisor.com highly respected Traveler Choice Awards 2012 named Sonoma as one of the best Wine Destinations in the world, second only to Tuscany (Napa wasn’t listed in the World listings, but was #2 for top U.S. destinations).
“Sonoma County may not produce as much wine as nearby Napa, but what it lacks in volume, it more than makes up for in variety. You’ll find everything from Chardonnay to Zinfandel here, and TripAdvisor travelers love the laid-back, unpretentious vibe of the wineries. After a strenuous day of wine-tasting, spoil yourself at one of the many local spas

2010 Budget Travel Magazine named Cloverdale as one of the Coolest American Cities

The Coolest Small Towns in America

“In Budget Travel's fifth-annual celebration of hometown escapes across the USA, we're spotlighting 10 places that somehow pack in more personality than cities triple their size. How? It all comes down to the people.”  Read more    Read more about Cloverdale
